Sticky Learning Framework

A backward-design framework for human, measurable learning outcomes.

Framework Model

Starts with outcomes and assessment.
Moves backward to content and delivery.

Human (empathy and clarity)

Visual overview

Here’s the framework at a glance. Read it clockwise, then use the steps below for the details.

Diagram showing the Sticky Learning framework, a backward design approach to onboarding. It illustrates how clear outcomes, real-world decision practice, feedback loops, and iteration reduce onboarding risk and errors.

Design Steps

1. Define the Goal (Terminal Objective)

State what learners will be able to do.
Example: Perform X safely and accurately.

2. Design the Assessment

Determine how success is measured.
Align directly with the terminal objective.
Include knowledge checks.
Include performance tasks.
Include case-based evaluation.

3. Identify Required Knowledge and Skills

List prerequisite skills and concepts.
Forms enabling objectives and modules.

4. Develop Sub-Objectives and Activities

Build microlearning or modules.
Teach each sub-skill.
Incorporate interactive learning and feedback.

5. Prototype, Test, and Refine

Run a pilot version.
Collect feedback on clarity, engagement, and usability.

6. Measure, Iterate, and Improve

Review learner outcomes and behavioral data.
Revise based on measurable impact and feedback.

Design Intent

This framework starts with outcomes and works backward to assessment and learning design. The goal is clarity, measurable performance, and human-centered delivery.
